Annie Wicklund (1911 - 1998)

Annie Wicklund was born in Berlin to Wilhelm Karl Sachs and wife Ida (b. Jonas). In February 1938 she managed, with the help of her sister Käthe who lived and worked in Oslo, to arrange a 3-month tourist visa to Norway. Being German and Jewish meant that her life was in immediate danger if she was to return to Germany. In order to arrange for a Norwegian residence permit Annie entered a pro forma marriage with the actor, Kåre Wicklund. The young couple fell in love however, and soon moved in to a small apartment in Oslo. In June 1939 Kåre also arranged for Annie’s mother Ida to come to Norway.

In the Autumn of 1942 Annie, Ida and Kåre lived in a place called Korgen in the County of Nordland. From here they escaped to Sweden in November the same year. Annie was later to recollect the dramatic conditions surrounding the escape, in several radio-interviews in the 1980s. After the war Annie Wicklund worked for several years as secretary for an advertising company in Oslo. She was also heavily involved in the creation of the Norwegian Humanist Association in 1956. Many of her thoughts and experiences were written down in prose, like in the poetry collection «LYSGLIMT» (“Flashes of Light”), published in 1986.

The poetry collection «LYSGLIMT» is a gift to the Oslo Jewish Museum from Jackie Feinberg.
