Julius Abrahamsen (1906 – 1999)
Julius Abrahamsen was born in Trondheim as one of eleven children to Salomon (1877-1938) and Miriam (1878-1974) Abrahamsen. They had both emigrated from Lithuania at the end of the 1800s. Salomon quickly became one of the leading merchants in Trondheim, where he opened his first clothing store in 1912. All the children were given a good education. Julius graduated from the Norwegian Dental College in 1935. However, he was also an accomplished composer of cabaret songs. Between 1927 and 1939 he composed a number of tunes, often in collaboration with revue authors Finn Bø and Per Kvist.
In 1940, after the German invasion, Julius went to Sweden and from there to the United States where he eventually made it to Little Norway in Canada. Here he served as a dentist for the Royal Norwegian Airforce. Six of his brothers also served in the Allied forces during the war. After the war Julius Abrahamsen settled down in Canada for good. He died in Ontario in 1999 at the age of 93 years.
